How to Make a Healing Skin Salve

How to Make a Healing Skin Salve

Herbal oils are easy to make and are the basis for both salves and lip balms, as well as massage oil. Salves are also called ointments and are simply a preparation made from herbs, oil and beeswax. When you apply a salve to your skin, it stays in place due to its thick consistency.

Things You'll Need:

1 pint olive or other oil

<br>Clean pint jar with fitting lid

<br>Herbs such as comfrey, plantain, echinacea, calendula

<br>Strainer

<br>1/4 cup beeswax

<br>Essential oil

1

Make an herbal oil first: Grind 1/2 oz. of fresh or dried herbs in a blender or mortar and pestle.

2

Place your herbs into a clean pint-size glass jar, and then add your preferred oil to fill the jar.

3

Cap tightly, and then heat for 3 hours at a low temperature in your oven--150 degrees is a good temperature if your oven goes down this far. If not, 170 degrees is fine.

4

Cool and strain before using.

5

Heat about 1 cup of your herbal oil using a double boiler or glass measuring cup placed in a pan of simmering water.

6

Melt beeswax in a separate pan, which you have also placed in a double boiler or a glass measuring cup in a pan with a small amount of water, at the same time you're heating the oil.

7

Add about 1/4 cup of melted wax to the hot oil and stir to mix it thoroughly.

8

Add essential oil to the containers in which you'll be pouring your finished salve; 16 drops per ounce of salve is a good amount.

9

Pour the hot mixture into small jars or lip balm-sized tubs and, when cool, use on wounds or as a lip balm.

Tips & Warnings

In general, it is preferable to use fresh herbs, but if you have only dried plants, use good quality dried herbs that haven't been sitting in your pantry for too long. If you use a fresh herb from your garden or from the grocery store, make certain that it has not been sprayed with any pesticides or herbicides.

<br>The type of oil you choose depends on its future use: olive oil is excellent for moisturizing and healing wounds; grape seed oil is preferred for massage; and almond or apricot oil are favored for cosmetic uses.

<br>To make sure you have added the proper amount of beeswax to your salve, do the "freezer test": simply dip a metal spoon into the hot mixture and then place it in your freezer on top of a paper towel for about two minutes. You can then use it on your skin to determine if it is the consistency you desire. If it's too waxy for your taste, add a bit more oil; if it's too liquid, add a bit more wax. Repeat the freezer test as many times as necessary until you get a blend of oil and wax that you like.

<br>
Lavender
essential oil is recommended for skin healing.

For serious skin problems or if bleeding is occurring, consult a medical professional.

<br>When working with hot oils and wax, always supervise
children
closely due to the danger of scalding.

How to Make a Gem Essence

How to Make a Gem Essence

The natural qualities of plants and rocks are unknown to many in modern society, but holistic healing techniques recognize the helpful items nature provides us. The following explains the process of making a gem essence, which can then be used to aid in various physical, mental, or emotional situations, depending on the gem or mineral used in the essence.

Things You'll Need:

Gem or stone--a piece the size of a quarter is fine

Sea salt

Spring water

Clear glass bowl

Small amber bottle(s)

Clear alcohol (such as vodka) or cider vinegar

1

Determine your purpose and select the appropriate gem or stone for the essence. The links listed in the Resources section below offer various crystals and their corresponding qualities.

2

Cleanse the gem energetically by covering it with sea salt in the glass bowl. It helps to hold your hands over the bowl and visualize the salt pulling energetic clutter from the crystal. Throw away the salt after use.

3

Rinse the gem and bowl under running water to remove salt residue.

4

Place the gem in a bowl of spring water and set it in the sun for two hours. This allows the healing qualities of the stone to be absorbed by the water.

5

Pour the water into your amber bottle(s), filling the bottle 3/4 full.

6

Fill the bottle with clear alcohol or cider vinegar which acts as a preservative and allows your gem essence to stay useful for a month or so.

Tips & Warnings

Check the density of the crystal before submerging it in water. Soft or water-soluble minerals do not work well in essences.

Amber or brown bottles with dropper caps can be found at many health food stores or new age stores.

High-quality alcohol gives better results than the cheap stuff. You aren't using much, so splurge on the $10 vodka instead of the $2 kind.

Do not use potentially toxic minerals such as those listed in the Moon Cave caution list in the resources section.

Using a hand gel sanitizer has become quite common these days. However, store bought sanitizers can be expensive and often contain harsh chemicals. Learn how to make your own hand gel sanitizer that is more affordable and much safer than what you will buy in the store.

Things You'll Need:

100% pure aloe vera gel

Witch hazel

Peppermint Oil

1

To make your own gel hand sanitizer, you will need to purchase a few ingredients. Most of these ingredients are very inexpensive and will allow you to make a great deal of hand gel sanitizer.

2

You will need to purchase 100% pure aloe vera gel, Witch Hazel, Tea Tree essential oil and Peppermint essential oil. All of these ingredients should be high quality and contain to additional additives.

3

Place about 1 cup of your pure aloe vera gel into a bowl.

4

Slowly mix in 1-2 teaspoons of Witch Hazel. You do not want the consistency of the gel to become too thin.

5

Add 3-4 drops of Tea Tree essential oil, and 3-4 drops of Peppermint essential oil. Slowly stir ingredients together.

6

If you find the consistency to be too thin, add more aloe vera gel a teaspoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency.

7

Store in your desired container. Use as you would any other hand sanitizer as necessary.

8

All of the ingredients in this mixture are safe and natural to use on your body. Witch Hazel, Tea Tree Oil and Peppermint all have antiseptic and astringent properties to them, which make them great for killing germs and also healing small cuts and wounds. The aloe vera gel will help soothe skin and keep skin from drying out.

Tips & Warnings

You can add other scented essential oils to the mixture for a more pleasant scent such as
lavender
oil or rose oil. If you find the tea tree oil and peppermint oil scent to strong, use lesser amounts.

Witch Hazel and Tea Tree oil can cause excessive dryness in people with sensitive skin. If you find this occurring, limit the use of your sanitizer to a few times a day.

How to Make a Face Mask That Treats Pimples

How to Make a Face Mask That Treats Pimples

This is a simple mask that will help treat acne and pimples, it will help to purify, sooth and rejuvenate the skin while being very gentle. The base itself will be able to be used for a few masks. The green clay is good for treating acne and problematic skin, it's rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium.

Things You'll Need:

2 oz green clay

3 tsp. corn flour

1 tsp. water

1 drop Chamomile essential oil

1 drop Lavender essential oil

1 drop Juniper essential oil

1 drop Patchouli essential oil

Small jar (for storing extra clay and flour mixture)

Small bowl

How to Make a Face Mask That Treats Pimples

1

Add the green clay and corn flour in a small jar, mix together with a spoon or apply the jar cover and shake the container. Only 1 tbsp. of the mask base will be used for each mask, so you will be able to set the rest aside for the next use.

2

Add 1 tbsp. of the mask base, the water and essential oils in a small bowl. This will form a paste. If the paste is too thick add a few drops extra water. Mix until the paste is nice and smooth.

3

Apply over the entire face, avoiding the area around the eyes, leave on for 15 minutes. The mask will dry and tighten on the skin. You may also notice dark round little spots that appear, this is the extra oil that has been pulled out of the skin.

4

Rinse off with lukewarm water; hot water will take away to much oil and dry out the skin. Gently pat the skin dry with a clean towel.

5

Moisturize your face with an appropriate moisturizer.

Tips & Warnings

Use this as needed and at least once a week.

Always use a clean towel on the face to keep extra bacteria away from the skin which can cause acne and pimples on problematic skin.

A great way to moisturize the skin after this mask is to apply a small amount of grapeseed oil to the skin and dab the face with a tissue to remove any extra grapeseed oil. There's a natural component in grapeseed the acts as a gentle astringent and will help treat the acne.

The acne may become worse at first only because the mask is helping to draw out all the agents that are causing the acne.

For a change instead of the clay and flour mask-mix a pack of pectin powder by following the directions on the box, then for every ounce add 1 tsp. of grapeseed oil. Measure out 1 tbsp plus 2 tsp and add your essential oils from the ingredients. Then follow steps three through five.

How to make a customized healing bath

How to make a customized healing bath

Water has many curative capabilities and the treatment of using water for its healing magic is called hydrotherapy. Baths are a form of hydrotherapy and are one of the easiest ways to cure physical, mental and spiritual problems. The next time you take a bath, maximize its healing power by adding some essential oils.

Things You'll Need:

a bath tub

select essential oils

hot water

1

For a calming bedtime bath that soothes the nerves and aids insomnia, add a few drops of chamomile
lavender
or ylang-ylang essential oil. All of these oils will relieve restlessness and tension, and calm the nerves. The water temperature also can aid in relaxation. Temperatures between 96 and 105 degrees relieves nervous tension.

2

To rejuvenate the body and revitalize the mind, try angelica, cinnamon or rose.
Basil
is also beneficial for mental fatigue and jasmine has stimulating and uplifting qualities. The water temperature should vary between 50 and 70 degrees because cold water creates feelings of exhilaration.

3

For sore muscles, aches and pains, add basil essential oil, which relaxes muscles, including those muscles we don't have voluntary control over like the heart. Elemi is also highly regarded for soothing sore muscles. Water temperatures should be the same as step one because hot water helps soothe muscles and calm muscle spasms.

4

For skin conditions, an array of oils can added to a bath. Tea tree oil works for a vast array of infections and is good for all skin types. For itchy, dry skin or conditions like eczema, bergamot oil is a good choice. Infected, swollen skin can be relieved by adding clary sage oil to the bath. Add geranium oil when the skin is irritated or inflamed. Lavender and rosewood alleviate dry, itchy skin.

5

To ease stress, anxiety and irritability, add a few drops of cedar wood, frankincense or lavender to the bath. This is also a good bath to take if you have a headache. Hot bath water aids in calming and relaxing the body.

6

Sensual scents that will stir sexual desire are jasmine, patchouli, rose, vanilla, ylang-ylang, and sandalwood. Having the water at a neutral temperature, which is the temperature of the body's surface (approximately 93 degrees) will be warm enough to relax, but not hot enough to make you sleepy.

Tips & Warnings

Temperatures above 100 degrees strains the heart and works to dilate the blood vessels to cool the body. People with heart conditions should avoid these temperatures.

Read all precautions associated with your chosen essential oils.

How to Follow a Qigong Lifestyle

How to Follow a Qigong Lifestyle

Unlike many modern health and fitness crazes, Chinese Qigong (pronounced "chee-gong") is not something that you "do" per se. It's more of a lifestyle to follow and a way of interacting with the energy of the world, both around you and inside you. A Qigong lifestyle is one devoted to self-improvement and self-healing. By actively manipulating the body's natural energy, called "Qi," Qigong practitioners treat conditions like stress, insomnia and fatigue using a combination of exercises, breathing techniques, meditation and sometimes special postures. Follow these steps to learn how to follow a Qigong lifestyle.

1

Re-evaluate the way you move and react to your environment. Qigong stresses slow, controlled movements done with precision and strength instead of quick, jerky motions that can cause injury and increase strain on the body.

2

Don't forget the importance of breath. Inhale deeply with your tongue touching your palate. Expand your chest and shoulders to allow your lungs to inflate completely.

3

Use your abdominal muscles to draw air into the lower lungs. Hold the breath in for a moment. Contract your abs in and up to force your lungs to empty completely.

4

Master breathing first. Then incorporate meditation exercises.

5

Eliminate unnecessary motion. Make every movement count. Qigong exercises should be done regularly, with precision and purpose.

6

Avoid toxins.

7

Practice stillness. Clear your mind, and avoid extremes of emotion. Take active steps to reduce the stress in your life.

8

Learn more about Qigong from recognized Qigong masters online by visiting the Qingway Qigong Web site (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

A Qigong lifestyle is inexpensive. Generally, classes are moderately priced.

Learn to incorporate the many different styles of Qigong into an overall lifestyle. Different styles include medical, spiritual and martial Qigong.

You may wish to investigate other traditional Chinese therapies that are often used in conjunction with Qigong, like acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

Whenever you consider a lifestyle change, make sure you understand what's involved. A commitment to a Qigong lifestyle includes setting aside enough time to exercise and meditate regularly.

If you experience symptoms like excessive sweating, numbness in the limbs or extreme fatigue during or after practicing Qigong, consult your doctor immediately.

Before you start any alternative medical technique, be aware that many have not been scientifically evaluated. Often, only limited information is available about their safety and effectiveness. Each state and each discipline has its own rules about how alternative medicine practitioners can be professionally licensed. If you decide to visit one, choose one licensed by a recognized national organization. Consult your primary health care provider about your decision first. How to Focus Your Qi Using Chinese Medicine

How to Focus Your Qi Using Chinese Medicine

Qi, pronounced and usually written as "Chi" in the Western world, is the fundamental life-force or life energy present in all things. It includes everything, from the air you breathe to the spider you just flushed to its doom. Ancient Chinese wisdom holds that Qi flows through all living beings and that it can be focused, harnessed and replenished by using the techniques of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TCM is an ancient discipline that uses acupuncture and herbs to treat the body. People with symptoms like arthritis or high blood pressure may want to focus their Qi; but proponents say that even very healthy people will benefit from it. Follow these steps to find out how to focus your Qi.

Things You'll Need:

Computer with Internet access

Understand Qi

1

Learn about the ancient meridian theory of the human body. It's been a fundamental tenet of traditional Chinese medicine for millennia. Qi is thought to flow through the body via its meridian system.

2

Educate yourself on the principles of the Zang Fu organ theory. Traditional Chinese medicine holds that lowered Qi levels are the result of insufficient Qi flowing through the Zang Fu organs.

3

Learn more at the Qi-Energy Web site (see Resources below).

Improve Your Qi Using Chinese Medicine

1

Talk to a qualified Chinese medicine practitioner. Explain the symptoms of the condition you want to treat in as much detail as possible. The cost of a consultation is relatively inexpensive, but the expense of a first visit tends to be pricier, since it's generally more intensive than subsequent sessions.

2

Familiarize yourself with herbal medicines than can be used to help focus your Qi. Ask your Chinese medicine practitioner if he or she can recommend particular supplements you should be taking.

3

Take a
martial arts
class. Using the martial arts is not just a physical exercise--it is mental and spiritual, as well. Many traditionalists insist that taking up a martial art is an excellent way to focus your Qi.

4

Sign up for a Qigong class. These are no more expensive than martial arts classes. They use a time-honored Chinese system of gentle exercises to focus your Qi.

5

Go on a diet. Your Chinese medicine practitioner can suggest foods that increase your Qi and assist in its smooth flow through your body.

6

Get a Chinese massage. For the cost of a visit to a Chinese medical practitioner, a specially-trained massage therapist can stimulate the parts of your body that facilitate better flow of Qi energy.

7

Consider an acupuncture treatment. Practitioners believe these can be used to unblock clogged meridians and allow for a full, uninterrupted flow of Qi.

Tips & Warnings

Visit the Institute of Traditional Medicine Web site to locate a Chinese medicine expert in your area who can answer questions you may have (see Resources below).

Consistent fatigue, dizziness or sluggishness can be the sign of serious medical conditions. You should always consult a physician if you experience repeated symptoms or discomfort.

Ask practitioners about fees, tuitions and payment options. Some may be more affordable than others. Some may require you to pay on a per-visit basis rather than on a monthly one.

4

Consider speaking to a doctor before starting Qigong practice. Though Qigong is low impact and low stress, it's usually considered a good idea to consult a medical professional before undertaking any exercise program.

5

Take classes from multiple practitioners. This is the best way to find one whose personality and approach is most compatible with your goals and needs.

6

Consider becoming a Qigong practitioner yourself. After you find one who can take you to a level of mastery, you may discover that you enjoy sharing this ancient practice with others.

Tips & Warnings

Each Qigong practitioner and school is unique and will charge students different fees. You should have little trouble finding a practitioner and school that is inexpensive and high quality.

Qigong practitioners are as diverse and varied as the many forms of the practice itself. Finding the perfect Qigong practitioner is much like finding the right family doctor.

Go to an emergency room or doctor's office immediately if you experience pain or a "tearing" sensation during Qigong. This could be a symptom of a serious injury.

Keep your doctor informed about the alternative medical technique you undertake.

How to Dress Up Head-to-Toe Denim

How to Dress Up Head-to-Toe Denim

A denim jacket and fitted jeans make a classic outfit. But classic can quickly mean boring if worn the wrong way. That's why it's important to mix in expressive accessories and exciting tops underneath of the jacket. Here are ways to punch up the denim jacket and jeans combination to prevent yourself from looking out-of-date:

Step
1

*Wear a scarf: The right scarf will add artistic flair to your denim ensemble. Find one in an unusual textured fabric or look for unique ethnic patterns. Silk scarves are always very ladylike and are particularly stunning in scarlet. Remember that you can wear scarves in places other than around your neck---you can also put them in your hair like headbands or use them as sashes by running them through your belt loops to accessorize your jeans.

Step
2

*Wear adorable shoes: Choose fabulous boots to slip over your jeans. Uggs are very stylish right now, but feminine cowboy boots can also be a cute touch. Killer boots with stiletto heels in black, red, or chocolate are another great option. For something more schoolgirl, go for pretty ballet flats or Mary-Janes. Just avoid white sneakers at any cost (the only place they ever belong is the gym, anyway!).

Step
3

*Wear interesting jewelry: Skip the traditional gold studs or conservative loop earrings for a day or two, if not more. Try chandelier earrings instead for instant Bohemian glamour---or even wooden or jade earrings. Substitute a gold chain with a funky beaded necklace. Go for mood rings or rings with giant minerals like amber or turquoise.

Step
4

*Wear a pretty blouse: Most women just wear plain cotton tank tops and tees under their denim jackets---but you don't have to be one of them! Go for Victorian-style lace blouses (looks even more beautiful with a cameo to match) and you'll immediately bring a new twist to your tired ensemble. You can also wear silk blouses or velveteen camisoles. The trick is to find something fancy in a rich fabric that will contrast against all that denim.

Step
5

*Wear colored denim: Ditch the blue jeans once in a while and put on a pair in lime green, fire engine red, canary yellow, or other fun colors. Even black jeans can be refreshing. Your jacket doesn't have to match your pants perfectly---in fact, it generally looks better if an outfit isn't too matchy-matchy, anyway.

Tips & Warnings

Here are some outfits to try for some inspiration:

Denim jacket, blue jeans, burgundy rib tee, brown/burgundy ribbon choker, brown/burgundy chandelier earrings, brown Uggs (or similar boots)

Denim jacket, blue jeans, black V-neck top, longish necklace (to peep out under the fold of the scarf), scarf, black flats

How to Dress Unique but Still Look Balanced

How to Dress Unique but Still Look Balanced

When putting your wardrobe together, you may want it to look highly fashionable. Try too hard to be unique, however, and you run the risk of creating an outfit that's more over-the-top than original. Use these strategies to dress yourself in a way that's eye-catching, but also well balanced.

1

Choose one piece in each outfit to be the focal point rather than trying to dress in unusual items from head to toe. Instead of wearing a brightly colored top, pants and an assortment of accessories, for example, pair a bold patterned top with neutral bottoms, plain shoes and a few coordinated accessories.

2

Be sure the fit and shape of the garments flatter your figure. You may love the color or pattern of a piece of clothing, but it won't be as attractive if it looks out of proportion with your height, build or the top or bottom that it's paired with. Prints and metallic pieces draw the eye first, so consider wearing them where they'll highlight your best assets.

3

Use metallic pieces sparingly since too much sparkle can throw your outfit off kilter. Try to balance two metallic items like a bold necklace and shoes or earrings and a collection of bangles, for example.

4

Experiment with different looks online before you buy your outfits. Mix and match to discover which shirts, skirts, jackets, pants, shoes, bags and jewelry will combine to create a harmonious balance. (See Resources)

Tips & Warnings

If you tend to over accessorize, use the time-honored trick of getting completely dressed and then removing one or two pieces of jewelry or the first accessory that catches your eye when you look in the mirror.

How to Dress to Send Signals

How to Dress to Send Signals

Dressing to send signals is moderately easy to do. Follow these steps, and you will be turning heads and getting the attention that you so desire. A few key pieces in your wardrobe can take you from the "girl next door" to the "sexy, red-hot vixen" in no time.

Things You'll Need:

This may include any combination of the following items:

Red-colored clothing

Fitted clothing

Mini-skirt

Mini-dress

Cleavage-bearing/skimpy top

Smoky eye shadow palette

Animal print clothing

Sky-high heels

Fishnets

Push-up bra

Lacy, satin camisole

A confident attitude

Step
1

Send a signal in a red-hot number. Color psychology reveals that wearing the color red indicates love, passion and romance.

Step
2

Show some skin. Bearing it all definitely will send some signals that you do not want to go home alone. Look for tops that reveal cleavage, but not too much. A hint of skin is often sexier and more mysterious than leaving nothing to the imagination. Halter tops with low V-necks are a great choice too. Cute tops that are cut out in the back or tie in the back are good picks as well.

Step
3

Find the perfect mini-skirt to pair with a sexy top. Instead, skip the sexy top and find a sexy mini-dress with all of the skin-bearing elements mentioned in the previous step. Don't forget to show those legs as well.

Step
4

Enter into the animal kingdom. Wearing an animal print such as tiger stripes, zebra stripes or leopard print will send signals that you are an adventurous, fun-loving girl who is not afraid to get wild.

Step
5

Create smoky eyes with a dark
eye
shadow

palette. Sultry, smoky eyes never go out of style and send signals that you are mysterious, daring and perhaps willing to be a little bit naughty.

Step
6

Slip into some sky-high heels. High heels have been viewed as sexy throughout the ages, and this view is not going to change anytime soon.

Step
7

Make his heart skip a beat as you send sexy signals with a pair of alluring fishnets. Fishnet hosiery can be an eye-catching, final touch to any sexy outfit. Men go crazy for fishnets, and that's why you'll see a wide array of fishnet stockings and pantyhose at any lingerie store.

Tips & Warnings

Stand proud and tall. This exudes confidence. Not only is confidence sexy, but also is necessary to pull off a bold, provocative look.

If you're not so much into dressing up in tight fitted tops and mini-dresses, you can still send signals with a more subdued look. Instead, try wearing a lacy, satin camisole under a cute sport jacket.

Always remember to wear a great push-up bra at all times.
