How to Dress Unique but Still Look Balanced

How to Dress Unique but Still Look Balanced

When putting your wardrobe together, you may want it to look highly fashionable. Try too hard to be unique, however, and you run the risk of creating an outfit that's more over-the-top than original. Use these strategies to dress yourself in a way that's eye-catching, but also well balanced.

1

Choose one piece in each outfit to be the focal point rather than trying to dress in unusual items from head to toe. Instead of wearing a brightly colored top, pants and an assortment of accessories, for example, pair a bold patterned top with neutral bottoms, plain shoes and a few coordinated accessories.

2

Be sure the fit and shape of the garments flatter your figure. You may love the color or pattern of a piece of clothing, but it won't be as attractive if it looks out of proportion with your height, build or the top or bottom that it's paired with. Prints and metallic pieces draw the eye first, so consider wearing them where they'll highlight your best assets.

3

Use metallic pieces sparingly since too much sparkle can throw your outfit off kilter. Try to balance two metallic items like a bold necklace and shoes or earrings and a collection of bangles, for example.

4

Experiment with different looks online before you buy your outfits. Mix and match to discover which shirts, skirts, jackets, pants, shoes, bags and jewelry will combine to create a harmonious balance. (See Resources)

Tips & Warnings

If you tend to over accessorize, use the time-honored trick of getting completely dressed and then removing one or two pieces of jewelry or the first accessory that catches your eye when you look in the mirror.
